Alternating Deltoid Raise
The Alternating Deltoid Raise combines two shoulder movements in one set. One repetition raises the dumbbells in front of the body, while the next raises them out to the sides. Alternating between front and lateral raises trains the shoulders through two different paths without changing equipment.
Training context
Setup cues for the Alternating Deltoid Raise
Stand with the dumbbells at your sides, your knees relaxed, and your torso upright. Use a lighter weight than you would for a press because the arms remain mostly extended throughout each raise.
The front and lateral repetitions should both stop around shoulder height. Raising higher or swinging the torso usually shifts attention away from the intended shoulder movement.
Technique overview
Alternate the direction, not the control
Raise both dumbbells forward with a slight bend in the elbows, then lower them slowly. On the next repetition, raise the dumbbells out to the sides. Keep your shoulders down, wrists neutral, and torso still in both directions. Stop the set when you need to swing or shrug to reach shoulder height.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
