Exercise guide
Alternating Kettlebell Press
The Alternating Kettlebell Press begins with two kettlebells held in the rack position at the shoulders. One bell presses overhead while the other remains in place, then the arms switch. The shoulders perform most of the pressing work, with the triceps assisting at the top.
Training context
What is the Alternating Kettlebell Press?
This exercise combines a single-arm overhead press with the added challenge of holding a second kettlebell at the shoulder. The stationary bell keeps the torso working while the pressing arm moves through its range.
It can be used for shoulder strength, kettlebell training, or as an alternative to pressing both weights at the same time. Use a load that allows the nonworking side to remain stable rather than drifting away from the body.
Technique overview
Keep the rack position steady
Clean both kettlebells to the shoulders and settle into a balanced stance. Press one kettlebell overhead without leaning away from it, then lower it smoothly back to the rack. Repeat with the opposite arm. Keep the wrist stacked, the forearm vertical, and the nonworking kettlebell close to the torso throughout the set.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
