Barbell Ab Rollout

This Barbell Ab Rollout variation begins in a push-up position with the hands holding a loaded barbell. Instead of rolling the bar away from the body, you raise the hips and roll it toward the feet before returning to the plank. The abdominals control the change in body position while the shoulders and lower back help stabilize the movement.

Training context

Setup cues for the Barbell Ab Rollout

Use small plates that can roll smoothly and make sure both sides of the bar are loaded evenly. Begin on a clear, level surface where the bar cannot strike other equipment.

This movement is closer to a rolling plank-to-pike than a standard kneeling rollout. Use a short range at first and increase it only when you can return to the plank without losing control of the bar.

Technique overview

Keep control of the rolling bar

Begin in a strong push-up position with your hands on the bar. Tighten your abs, lift your hips, and roll the bar toward your feet while keeping the arms mostly vertical. Pause briefly, then roll forward until your body returns to a controlled plank. Avoid letting the hips drop below the starting position or allowing the bar to roll faster than you can stop it.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
