Barbell Rollout from Bench

The Barbell Rollout from Bench is an advanced rollout variation performed with the knees elevated on a bench. The bar rolls forward along the floor as the arms move overhead and the body extends. The abdominals provide the main control while the lats, shoulders, glutes, and hamstrings help maintain position.

Training context

Why use the Barbell Rollout from a bench?

Elevating the knees changes the starting angle and can make the rollout more demanding than a standard floor-kneeling variation. It also requires the bench and barbell to remain aligned throughout the set.

This variation is best introduced after a controlled kneeling rollout has already been developed. Start with a short range rather than assuming the bar must travel as far as possible.

Technique overview

Keep the bench and bar aligned

Place your knees securely on the bench and grip the bar on the floor below. Brace your abs and glutes, then roll forward while keeping the arms extended and the hips controlled. Stop before the lower back begins to sag or the knees lose contact with the bench. Pull the bar back slowly and make sure the bench does not move.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
