Exercise guide
Barbell Side Bend
The Barbell Side Bend is performed with a bar across the upper back while the torso bends laterally. The abdominals and lower-back muscles help control the movement and return the body to an upright position. The long bar also requires enough open space on both sides.
Training context
What is the Barbell Side Bend?
This exercise trains controlled side bending rather than rotation. The hips and legs remain mostly still while the torso moves a short distance to one side and returns.
Because the bar creates a long lever across the shoulders, a light load is usually appropriate. More weight or range is not automatically better if the hips shift or the torso begins to twist.
Technique overview
Bend sideways without rotating
Stand with your feet planted and the bar resting securely across your upper back. Bend slowly to one side through a comfortable range, return to the center, and repeat on the other side. Keep your chest facing forward and avoid leaning backward or allowing the bar to tilt unevenly.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
