Exercise guide
Dumbbell Lying Supination
Despite its name and forearm classification, the supplied instructions describe a side-lying shoulder external-rotation movement. The elbow remains bent while the forearm rotates upward and the upper arm stays close to the torso. Traditional forearm supination would rotate the palm without this larger shoulder action.
Training context
Keeping the supplied movement controlled
The elbow and upper arm should remain fixed as the dumbbell travels through a small semicircular path. The shoulder controls the movement while the hand simply holds the load.
This exercise should use light resistance. A dumbbell that pulls the shoulder forward or causes the elbow to leave the side is too heavy.
Technique overview
Keep the elbow anchored beside the torso
Lie on the side with the working elbow bent and the upper arm held near the torso. Rotate the forearm upward without rolling the body backward or lifting the elbow. Stop at a comfortable shoulder range, then lower slowly. Repeat the same setup on the other side.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
