Dumbbell Shrug
The Dumbbell Shrug is a standing exercise for the upper trapezius muscles. The arms remain straight while the shoulders elevate and lower through a short range. Dumbbells allow the hands to rest naturally at the sides.
Training context
Before adding Dumbbell Shrugs
The range is naturally small and does not need to be exaggerated. Heavy weights are useful only when the shoulders can still rise without the elbows bending or the torso moving.
Rolling the shoulders forward or backward is unnecessary. The movement should travel primarily upward and downward.
Technique overview
Lift the shoulders straight upward
Stand tall with the dumbbells at the sides and arms extended. Elevate the shoulders toward the ears without bending the elbows or pushing the head forward. Pause briefly, then lower fully under control. Avoid bouncing from the knees or rotating the shoulders.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
