Dumbbell Side Bend exercise guide

Exercise guide

Dumbbell Side Bend

The Dumbbell Side Bend trains lateral trunk flexion while one dumbbell is held at the side. The abdominal and side-trunk muscles control the bend and return. The movement is side-to-side rather than rotational.

Training context

What is the Dumbbell Side Bend?

The torso bends laterally while the hips and shoulders continue facing forward. The dumbbell adds resistance as the body moves away from or back toward the loaded side.

A larger range is not always better. Stop before the hips shift, the torso rotates, or the movement becomes uncomfortable in the lower back.

Technique overview

Bend directly to the side

Stand tall with one dumbbell held beside the thigh. Bend laterally through a controlled range without twisting, leaning forward, or moving the hips. Return to upright using the trunk rather than momentum. Complete the planned repetitions before switching the dumbbell to the other hand.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
