Exercise guide

Janda Sit-Up

The Janda Sit-Up is a deliberately slow sit-up performed while actively tightening the glutes and hamstrings. The intention is to limit unnecessary hip-flexor dominance and keep more attention on the abdominals. The hip flexors are not completely switched off, so control remains more important than the theory behind the variation.

Training context

How the Janda Sit-Up Differs

The exercise uses a slow ascent and active lower-body tension instead of swinging through a conventional sit-up. Some versions use a partner or fixed object to create backward pressure against the heels.

The torso does not need to rise completely upright. Use the range that can be completed without the feet lifting or the movement accelerating suddenly.

Technique overview

Create tension before raising the torso

Lie with the knees bent and feet planted. Tighten the glutes and hamstrings before beginning a slow curl of the torso. Exhale gradually during the ascent and maintain the same lower-body tension. Lower with control and reset fully before the next repetition.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
