Exercise guide
Otis-Up
The Otis-Up combines a weighted sit-up with a press performed as the torso rises. The abdominals and hip flexors lift the torso while the chest, shoulders, and triceps move the weight overhead.
Training context
Setup Cues for the Otis-Up
The feet must be secured without creating painful pressure, and the selected weight should remain easy to control above the face and head. Begin with a light plate, medicine ball, or dumbbell.
The press and sit-up should remain coordinated. If the weight pulls the torso forward or the lower back becomes uncomfortable, reduce the load or perform the movements separately.
Technique overview
Press only after the torso is under control
Begin with the knees bent, feet secured, and weight held at the chest. Curl the torso upward and press the load as balance is established near the top. Return the weight to the chest before lowering, and stop short of any range that causes a rebound or loss of control.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
