Exercise guide
Piriformis-SMR
Piriformis-SMR uses a foam roller beneath one side of the buttocks while the ankle crosses over the opposite knee. The position shifts pressure toward the upper glute and deep hip area.
Training context
Before Adding Piriformis-SMR
The crossed-leg position should remain comfortable at the hip and knee. The roller cannot isolate the piriformis precisely, so treat it as general upper-glute self-massage.
Reduce pressure by keeping more weight through the hands and supporting foot. Stop for numbness, tingling, or pain traveling down the leg.
Technique overview
Shift onto the glute gradually
Sit on the roller, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, and lean toward the crossed-leg side. Move through a small area of the buttock or hold over mild tension. Keep the hip relaxed, control pressure with the hands and foot, and switch sides slowly.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
