Scapular Pull-Up
The Scapular Pull-Up is a small-range hanging exercise that moves the body by depressing and controlling the shoulder blades. The traps, lats, and middle back contribute while the elbows remain straight.
Training context
How Scapular Pull-Ups Differ
Unlike a full pull-up, the elbows do not bend and the chin does not move toward the bar. The body rises only a few inches as the shoulders move away from the ears.
This drill can help develop awareness of the starting phase of a pull-up. It should not be forced into a large range by arching or swinging.
Technique overview
Move the shoulder blades, not the elbows
Hang from the bar with a secure overhand grip and straight arms. Without bending the elbows, draw the shoulders down and slightly back so the body rises a small distance. Pause, then return gradually to the relaxed hanging position.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
