Exercise guide

Seated Barbell Twist

The Seated Barbell Twist rotates the torso while a bar rests across the upper back. The abdominals and obliques control the rotation, but the loaded behind-the-neck setup also places demands on the spine and shoulders.

Training context

Using Seated Twists in a Workout

Loaded spinal rotation offers limited room for error and is not necessary for developing the abdominals. An unloaded dowel, controlled cable rotation, or Pallof variation can provide easier-to-manage alternatives.

When this exercise is used, the bar should be extremely light and the rotation small. It should not be performed by swinging toward the end range.

Technique overview

Use minimal load and a short rotation

Sit firmly with both feet planted and position a very light bar or dowel across the upper back. Rotate the torso only through a controlled, comfortable range while keeping the hips and head generally forward. Return through the center before turning to the other side.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
