Exercise guide
Sledgehammer Swings
Sledgehammer Swings combine trunk rotation, shoulder movement, grip strength, and forceful extension through the body. The abdominals help transfer force while the shoulders, back, forearms, and lower legs support the swing.
Training context
Setup Cues for Sledgehammer Swings
Use a tire designed to absorb repeated strikes and inspect the hammer head and handle before starting. Keep other people outside the full swing and rebound area.
Practice the path slowly before increasing force. Alternating the lead side can help distribute the work more evenly.
Technique overview
Control both the strike and rebound
Stand far enough from the tire that the hammer head reaches its center without overreaching. Raise the hammer while the upper hand slides toward the head, then drive it downward as that hand slides toward the lower hand. Absorb the rebound before beginning another swing and reset the feet whenever the stance changes.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
