Exercise guide

Smith Machine Glute Bridge

The Smith Machine Glute Bridge adds guided resistance across the hips while the upper back remains on the floor. The glutes provide the main hip extension, with the hamstrings and lower back assisting stabilization.

Training context

Understanding the Smith Glute Bridge

The bar should rest across a thick pad over the hip crease rather than directly on the pelvis. Set the machine safeties so the bar cannot trap the lifter at the bottom.

Foot position affects how the movement feels. Place the feet where the shins approach vertical near the top without the heels lifting.

Technique overview

Lift through the hips without overextending the back

Lie beneath the padded bar with both feet planted and hands stabilizing the bar. Drive through the feet to raise the hips until the torso and thighs form a controlled line. Squeeze the glutes, lower slowly, and keep the ribs from flaring at the top.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
