Exercise guide
Snatch Shrug
The Snatch Shrug trains the traps using the wide grip and mid-thigh position associated with the snatch. The forearms and shoulders stabilize the bar while the shoulder girdle elevates.
Training context
Keeping the Snatch Shrug Controlled
The wide grip increases the demand on the hands and upper back. Straps may help when grip fatigue limits the target muscles, but the bar must remain secure.
Loading should not slow the shrug into a long grind or cause the elbows to bend. The working range is naturally short.
Technique overview
Elevate the shoulders without rowing the bar
Hold the bar at mid-thigh with a wide grip, arms straight, and torso slightly inclined. Shrug the shoulders upward while keeping the bar close and elbows extended. Pause briefly, lower the shoulders under control, and reset the hang position.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
