Exercise guide
Backward Medicine Ball Throw
The Backward Medicine Ball Throw is an explosive exercise in which the ball travels overhead and behind the body. The movement begins from a squat or hip-loaded position and finishes with forceful extension through the legs, hips, and arms. It can be performed with a partner or in a clear area where the ball can be retrieved safely.
Training context
What makes the Backward Medicine Ball Throw different?
Unlike a controlled strength exercise, each repetition is intended to produce speed and power. The lower body begins the throw, while the shoulders and arms guide the ball overhead and behind you.
The exercise requires more open space than most medicine ball movements because the landing point is outside your direct view. Choose the throwing direction and retrieval plan before beginning the set.
Technique overview
Extend through the whole body
Stand with the medicine ball between your legs and face away from the throwing area. Lower into a comfortable squat, then drive through the floor and extend the hips, knees, and arms to throw the ball overhead behind you. Finish tall without falling backward. Reset fully between throws and make sure the area remains clear.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
