Exercise guide

Balance Board

The Balance Board is a stability exercise performed by standing on an unstable platform and trying to keep it controlled. The calves work around the ankle while the quadriceps and hamstrings help stabilize the knees. Difficulty changes depending on the board design, stance, and amount of outside support used.

Training context

Muscles worked on a Balance Board

The calves and smaller muscles around the ankle make frequent adjustments to keep the board level. The quadriceps and hamstrings help control the knees while the hips and trunk maintain the rest of the body over the platform.

Balance work is not about remaining perfectly still. Small corrections are expected, but they should stay controlled rather than becoming sudden steps or jumps off the board.

Technique overview

Begin near a stable support

Place the board on a clear, level surface near something sturdy you can hold if needed. Step onto the center, keep your knees slightly bent, and distribute your weight through both feet. Look forward and make small ankle adjustments to stay balanced. Step off carefully when the hold ends or before you lose control.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
