Barbell Seated Calf Raise
The Barbell Seated Calf Raise trains the calves from a seated position. The balls of the feet rest on a raised block while the bar sits across the thighs. This setup creates space for the heels to lower and rise through a controlled range.
Training context
Setup cues for the Barbell Seated Calf Raise
Position the block so the balls of both feet are supported while the heels remain free to move. The bar should rest on the thighs above the knees rather than directly on the kneecaps.
A pad can make the bar more comfortable and easier to keep in place. Assistance with loading and removing the bar may be useful, especially at heavier weights.
Technique overview
Control the heels in both directions
Hold the bar steady across your thighs and lower the heels into a comfortable stretch. Press through the balls of the feet to raise the heels, pause briefly, and return slowly. Keep both feet planted evenly on the block and avoid bouncing through the bottom of the repetition.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
