Exercise guide
Band Pull Apart
The Band Pull Apart is an upper-body exercise performed by stretching a resistance band across the chest. The rear shoulders, middle back, and traps work together as the hands move outward. It requires little equipment and can be used during a warm-up or as lighter accessory work.
Training context
Keeping the Band Pull Apart controlled
Band resistance increases as the hands move farther apart, so the end of the repetition usually feels harder than the beginning. Choose a band that allows you to reach the chest without leaning backward or bending the elbows excessively.
The exercise can be performed for controlled repetitions during an upper-body warm-up or added after rows and presses. Consistent hand spacing and band strength make it easier to compare sessions.
Technique overview
Pull the band apart without shrugging
Hold the band in front of you with your arms near shoulder height and a slight softness in the elbows. Move your hands outward while keeping the torso still and the shoulders away from the ears. Pause when the band approaches the chest, then return slowly. Avoid snapping the band back or using a large backward lean to finish the movement.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
