Exercise guide

Banded Lateral Walk

The Banded Lateral Walk is a side-stepping exercise for the outer hips and glutes. A loop band is placed above the knees or around the ankles, and each step moves against its resistance. The exercise is commonly used in warm-ups, hip-strengthening work, and lower-body circuits.

Training context

Benefits of the Banded Lateral Walk

The exercise trains the muscles that move and stabilize the legs to the side. Since the band remains under tension, both the lead and trailing leg contribute throughout the set.

Band placement changes the difficulty. Positioning it around the ankles usually creates a longer lever than placing it above the knees. Start with the version that lets you maintain alignment and steady steps.

Technique overview

Keep the band under tension

Begin with your knees slightly bent and hips pushed back. Step sideways without allowing the lead knee to collapse inward. Bring the trailing foot closer, but stop before the band becomes loose. Keep your toes facing mostly forward and avoid rocking the torso from side to side. Complete the planned steps, then reverse direction.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
