Barbell Shoulder Press
The Barbell Shoulder Press is a seated overhead press performed with back support. The shoulders provide most of the pressing force, while the triceps extend the elbows and the upper chest assists. The barbell keeps both hands connected to one load throughout the movement.
Training context
What makes the Barbell Shoulder Press different?
Back support reduces the need to balance the torso compared with a standing press. This can make it easier to focus on the overhead path, although the shoulders and elbows still need a comfortable grip and range.
Rack height should allow the bar to be unracked without an awkward reach. Set the bench so the bar can travel overhead without striking the rack uprights.
Technique overview
Press without leaning away from the bench
Sit firmly against the support and take an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width. Lower the bar toward the upper chest or shoulder level through a comfortable range, then press overhead. Keep the wrists stacked and avoid using a large lower-back arch to move the bar. Rerack only after the bar is fully controlled.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
