Calves-SMR

Calves SMR uses a foam roller to apply pressure along the back of the lower leg. The hands support the body while the calf moves slowly over the roller. Crossing the opposite leg on top increases pressure, while keeping it on the floor makes the drill easier.

Training context

Keeping calf foam rolling controlled

Roll through the muscular portion of the calf rather than directly over the Achilles tendon or the back of the knee. Pressure should remain manageable enough that the leg can relax.

Pausing briefly over a sensitive area may be useful, but sharp or radiating discomfort is a reason to reduce pressure or move away from that point.

Technique overview

Keep the rolling pace unhurried

Place the roller beneath one calf and support your body with your hands. Move slowly from above the ankle toward below the knee, turning the leg slightly to reach different portions of the calf. Pause for 10 to 30 seconds where appropriate, then continue. Lower the hips or uncross the legs to reduce pressure.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
