Exercise guide
Circus Bell
The Circus Bell is a strongman event performed with an oversized thick-handled dumbbell. The implement is cleaned from the floor to one shoulder and then driven overhead with one arm. The shoulders provide the main overhead effort while the legs, hips, back, traps, triceps, forearms, and grip assist.
Training context
Who should train the Circus Bell?
This is a specialized event for lifters experienced with heavy cleans, push presses, and unstable overhead implements. Bell dimensions and handle thickness can make the movement very different from a standard dumbbell press.
Training should take place on a suitable rubber surface with a clear drop area. The implement must be inspected before use and handled according to the facility's rules.
Technique overview
Stabilize the bell before driving overhead
Grip the bell securely, extend the hips and knees, and guide it to the working shoulder. Settle one bell head behind or against the shoulder before beginning the dip. Drive with the legs and finish with the arm locked overhead and the body balanced beneath the load. Lower or drop the bell only into a clear designated area.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
