Dumbbell Scaption
Dumbbell Scaption raises the arms in a path between a front raise and a lateral raise. This angle follows the natural plane of the shoulder blades. The shoulders perform the movement while the traps and other shoulder-blade muscles assist with control.
Training context
How does Scaption differ from a lateral raise?
Instead of lifting directly to the sides, the arms travel roughly 30 degrees forward. The thumbs remain pointed upward, creating a neutral shoulder position.
Scaption is generally performed with light dumbbells. The purpose is controlled shoulder movement rather than lifting the heaviest possible load.
Technique overview
Raise in line with the shoulder blades
Stand tall with light dumbbells and the thumbs facing upward. Raise the arms forward and outward in a V-shaped path until they approach shoulder height. Keep the elbows soft and shoulders away from the ears. Lower slowly along the same path.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
