Exercise guide

Dumbbell Shoulder Press

The Dumbbell Shoulder Press is a seated overhead pressing exercise. The shoulders provide the main force while the triceps straighten the elbows. Back support helps stabilize the torso as each dumbbell moves independently.

Training context

Before adding the Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Adjust the bench so it supports the torso without forcing an exaggerated lower-back arch. The dumbbells should be brought to shoulder height using a controlled setup rather than curled awkwardly from the floor.

The weights do not need to touch overhead. Maintaining shoulder and wrist alignment is more important than bringing them together.

Technique overview

Press above the shoulders without leaning back

Plant the feet and settle the torso against the back support. Begin with the dumbbells near shoulder height and press overhead while keeping the wrists stacked. Lower slowly until the shoulders remain comfortable. Stop the set before the back arches or the weights drift unevenly.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
