Exercise guide
External Rotation
Side-Lying External Rotation is a shoulder-control exercise performed with a light dumbbell. The elbow stays bent and close to the torso while the forearm rotates upward. The small rotator-cuff muscles provide the movement and help stabilize the shoulder.
Training context
Keeping External Rotation controlled
The available range is small, and the exercise rarely requires a heavy dumbbell. The upper arm should remain against the side rather than lifting from the torso.
Rolling the body backward makes the dumbbell appear to travel farther without creating additional shoulder rotation.
Technique overview
Keep the elbow anchored to the side
Lie on the side with the elbow bent near 90 degrees and held beside the torso. Rotate the forearm upward while keeping the wrist neutral and body still. Stop at a comfortable shoulder range, then lower slowly. Use very light resistance and repeat the same setup on the other side.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
