Exercise guide
Handstand Push-Ups
Handstand Push-Ups are an advanced vertical pressing exercise performed while inverted. The shoulders provide the main effort while the triceps help extend the elbows. Balance, overhead mobility, and the ability to support bodyweight through the hands are required before attempting the full movement.
Training context
Setup Cues for Handstand Push-Ups
Use a clear wall, stable floor, and padded target beneath the head. The source gives conflicting guidance about body and head orientation, so establish a wall-supported position that keeps the neck neutral and the hands firmly planted.
A spotter, partial range, elevated head target, or pike push-up progression may be appropriate before full repetitions. Never rely on the head to stop an uncontrolled descent.
Technique overview
Lower toward a protected target
Enter the handstand under control and establish a firm hand position before bending the elbows. Lower slowly until the head lightly approaches a padded target, keeping the forearms organized beneath the body. Press back to straight arms without bouncing from the head or losing wall contact. End the set before the descent can no longer be controlled.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
