Exercise guide

Iron Cross

The Iron Cross is a dumbbell strength exercise that combines a squat with a wide, shoulder-height arm position. The shoulders are the primary focus, while the chest, glutes, hamstrings, lower back, quadriceps, and traps are listed as supporting muscles. It asks you to coordinate the lower-body movement with a demanding dumbbell position rather than treating either part separately.

Training context

What makes the Iron Cross different?

The Iron Cross combines two recognizable tasks in one exercise: controlling a squat and managing dumbbells away from the sides of the body. That makes the shoulder position and the timing of the lower-body movement important parts of the same repetition, not separate exercises joined at random.

Use a dumbbell load that lets you keep both sides organized through the range you choose. The exercise can fit as focused full-body strength work, but the weight on the dumbbells should not force you to rush the squat or lose the arm position just to finish a set.

Technique overview

Coordinate the squat and arm position

Begin with enough room to move the dumbbells without striking nearby equipment. Establish a balanced stance, arrange the weights evenly, and move through the squat with a range you can control. Keep both arms working at the same pace instead of letting one side lead. If the dumbbells drift, the torso changes sharply, or the lower-body movement becomes hurried, reduce the load and rebuild the sequence.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
