Exercise guide
IT Band and Glute Stretch
This lying stretch guides one extended leg across the body using a belt, rope, or band. The position may create tension through the glutes, outer hip, hamstrings, and surrounding tissues. The IT band itself is dense connective tissue and is not lengthened like a muscle.
Training context
Setup Cues for the Outer-Hip Stretch
Keep the upper back and shoulders supported while the leg moves across the body. The strap should help position the leg without forcing it toward the floor.
A softly bent knee may be used if a straight leg creates excessive tension behind the knee. Stop before the pelvis rolls completely onto its side.
Technique overview
Guide the leg across without forcing the twist
Lie on the back with the strap around one foot. Raise the leg and guide it gradually across the body while keeping the opposite shoulder grounded. Pull the toes gently toward the shin if comfortable. Hold a mild stretch, then return the leg to the center before changing sides.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
