Exercise guide
Machine Shoulder (Military) Press
The Machine Shoulder Press guides the handles overhead while the seat and backrest support the torso. The shoulders provide the main effort and the triceps straighten the elbows.
Training context
How the Machine Shoulder Press Differs
Compared with free weights, the machine determines much of the handle path and reduces the need to balance the load. This can make direct shoulder work easier to control.
Adjust the seat so the handles begin near shoulder height. A poor seat position may force the elbows too far behind the body or cause the shoulders to shrug before the press begins.
Technique overview
Press overhead without arching away from the pad
Sit with the back supported and hands secured on the handles. Press upward until the arms reach a controlled extension without shrugging or leaning backward. Lower slowly until the handles return near shoulder height.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
