Exercise guide

One-Arm Side Laterals

The One-Arm Side Lateral is a supported dumbbell raise performed while leaning slightly toward the working side. The shoulder lifts the arm while the free hand provides balance.

Training context

Muscles Worked by One-Arm Side Laterals

The middle portion of the shoulder provides much of the lifting effort. The upper back and trunk help keep the shoulder blade and torso controlled.

The traditional “pouring water” cue is not required and may feel uncomfortable. A neutral hand or slight thumb-up position often keeps the shoulder in a more comfortable path.

Technique overview

Raise the arm without swinging the torso

Hold a secure support with the free hand and lean only enough to establish the starting position. Raise the dumbbell outward with a soft elbow bend until it approaches shoulder height. Keep the neck relaxed and lower slowly through the same path before changing sides.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
