Exercise guide

Side Lateral Raise

The Side Lateral Raise trains the shoulders by lifting dumbbells outward from the sides. The standing position allows a natural base but also makes it easier to create momentum with the hips or torso.

Training context

Using Lateral Raises in a Workout

Lateral raises often fit after heavier pressing as focused shoulder work. They can also appear earlier with light weights when controlled shoulder movement is the priority.

Use a neutral or slightly thumbs-up hand position instead of intentionally pouring the dumbbells downward. Stop before shrugging or swinging replaces the intended raise.

Technique overview

Raise outward while keeping the torso quiet

Stand with the dumbbells beside the thighs and elbows softly bent. Raise the arms outward through a comfortable path, stopping near shoulder height or earlier. Lower slowly and reset before momentum develops.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
