Exercise guide

Smith Machine Calf Raise

The Smith Machine Calf Raise trains the calves by raising and lowering the heels while the guided bar provides external resistance. An elevated platform can increase the available ankle range.

Training context

Setup Cues for Smith Calf Raises

Use a purpose-built calf block or a wide, stable platform that cannot slide or tip. Set the machine safeties high enough to catch the bar if balance is lost.

Place the balls of both feet securely on the platform and keep enough contact to control the bottom position. The knees may remain softly extended rather than forced into lockout.

Technique overview

Move through the ankles without bouncing

Unrack the bar with the feet stable and torso upright. Lower the heels through a comfortable stretch, then press through the balls of the feet to rise. Pause briefly at the top, lower slowly, and step fully onto the platform before reracking.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
