Exercise guide

Smith Machine Overhead Shoulder Press

The Smith Machine Overhead Shoulder Press trains the shoulders and triceps from a seated position. Back support can reduce torso movement while the machine guides the bar vertically or along a slight angle.

Training context

Benefits of the Smith Shoulder Press

The guided bar can make the movement easier to set up and repeat than a free-bar press. The hooks also provide several potential reracking points.

Seat placement determines whether the bar clears the face and follows a comfortable shoulder path. Set the safeties and test the movement before adding load.

Technique overview

Press without leaning away from the bar

Sit with the feet planted and back supported, then unhook the bar from a comfortable starting height. Lower it toward chin or upper-chest level without forcing excessive depth. Press upward while keeping the torso against the pad and rerack through both hooks.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
