Smith Machine Reverse Calf Raises
The Smith Machine Reverse Calf Raise is a toe-raising movement performed with the heels supported on a platform. Although the source lists calves, the action primarily involves ankle dorsiflexion through the muscles along the front of the lower leg.
Training context
How the Reverse Calf Raise Works
Unlike a regular calf raise, the heels remain supported while the toes lift. The Smith bar supplies balance and external loading, but the small movement generally requires little resistance.
Use a broad, stable heel platform and set the safeties. A wall-supported bodyweight toe raise is a simpler alternative.
Technique overview
Lift the toes while the heels stay planted
Stand with both heels secure on the platform and the forefeet free to move. Unrack the bar, keep the knees softly extended, and lift the toes toward the shins. Pause briefly, lower the forefeet slowly, and step fully onto the platform before reracking.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
