Exercise guide
Standing Barbell Calf Raise
The Standing Barbell Calf Raise loads the calves while the bar rests across the upper back. Balance and rack setup are important because the hands cannot be used for external support.
Training context
Understanding the Barbell Calf Raise
The exercise can be performed from the floor or from a stable calf block for additional range. A raised surface increases the balance demand and should not slide or tip.
Set the rack safeties and use a load that allows the heels to move without bouncing. A Smith machine or standing calf machine may be easier to stabilize.
Technique overview
Raise and lower through the ankles
Unrack the bar from a balanced stance with the knees softly extended. Press through the balls of the feet to raise the heels, pause briefly, and lower under control. Keep the torso steady and rerack before balance becomes unreliable.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
