Standing Barbell Press Behind Neck
The Standing Barbell Press Behind Neck trains the shoulders and triceps from a bar position across the upper back. The starting position requires more shoulder mobility than a press performed from the front rack.
Training context
Setup Cues for the Behind-the-Neck Press
Use this variation only when the behind-the-neck position is comfortable and can be reached without forcing the wrists, elbows, or shoulders. A wider grip may reduce the required shoulder rotation.
Test the movement with an empty bar and set the rack safeties. A standard overhead press is an appropriate alternative when mobility is limited.
Technique overview
Press vertically without forcing the bottom position
Stand firmly with the bar resting across the upper traps rather than the neck. Brace the torso and press the bar overhead through a comfortable path. Lower slowly to the same supported position and stop if the shoulders pinch or the torso must lean excessively.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
